Player representatives reportedly contest KeSPA’s Asian Games roster

KeSPA officially opened its appeal window from May 18 to May 28 following the roster announcement. The federation previously stated that the final lineup was selected through a combination of domestic results, Worlds performances, individual awards and advanced in-game statistics.

The situation gained further traction after Arnold Hur publicly criticized the process on X. The Gen.G CEO argued that certain evaluation metrics fail to properly reflect the real impact of players operating within specific team systems, specifically referencing Kiin’s weakside role inside Gen.G.

Part of the backlash also comes from the stakes tied to the Asian Games themselves. Winning the tournament grants South Korean players an exemption from the country’s standard military service, replacing the usual 18-month obligation with just four weeks of basic military training.

That detail has fueled even more discussion around the final roster. Faker, Keria and Zeus already secured their exemptions after winning the previous edition of the Asian Games. Meanwhile, players such as Kiin, Viper and Oner have never received that exemption, making their omissions significantly more impactful for their careers.

While Chovy’s absence initially generated discussion, reports surrounding the midlaner’s chronic hip issues and recovery concerns quickly shifted attention toward elsewhere.

The final roster — featuring Faker, Zeus, Canyon, Zeka, Gumayusi and Keria — now heads into the final approval phase under growing scrutiny, with the selection process itself becoming one of the main storylines ahead of the 2026 Asian Games.

At the same time, most fans would probably agree on one thing: regardless of the controversy surrounding the selection, South Korea will still enter the tournament as the overwhelming favorite — which says a lot about the country’s depth of talent.
