The second night of the Worlds 2026 Play-Ins in Los Angeles set up the weekend. Karmine Corp and MVK Esports met in the upper bracket final for a direct ticket to the Qualifying Match. Later in the night, Cloud9 and FURIA played the tournament's first elimination series after both lost their opening matches, and the bracket stopped following the script.

A gap in level

After their aggressive showing against FURIA, MVK Esports faced a step up in level against the LEC's third seed. They came with ideas, swapping picks between top and mid lane in draft, a trick they went back to later in the series. It changed little. The KC bot lane set the tone in the third minute, when Caliste "Caliste" Henry-Hennebert's Draven picked up a double kill, and KC built on that lead with a composure they had lacked against Cloud9. MVK grouped constantly and found kills here and there. KC simply played around it, using the other side of the map, stacking dragons and pushing the gold gap past 10,000.

Down 1-0, MVK played their boldest card. Lương "Gury" Hải Long made way for Lê "SanSan" Quốc Khánh in the jungle, for the first tier-one game of his career. The gamble paid off at first. On Qiyana, behind a draft built to fight early, the rookie ran the game at full speed and unsettled KC with ganks on top and bot. The difference showed again as soon as the game moved to five-versus-five fights. KC won them, took the lead back and rolled through the dragons to go 2-0 up.

Game three brought back the Kog'Maw mid of Võ "Chika" Lê Nhân, the pick that had turned heads against FURIA. This time it had little room. Martin "Yike" Sundelin punished his positioning early, and KC then controlled the map, slowly bleeding MVK without leaving them a way out. Kim "Canna" Chang-dong summed up the gap when he turned a SanSan gank into a kill of his own on Kennen. The Kog'Maw still won a few trades in the late game, but while MVK fought for Elder, Kang "kyeahoo" Ye-hoo and Canna ended the series with a backdoor.

KC needed five games and a comeback to get past Cloud9. Against MVK, they controlled all three games and looked far more settled. They now wait for Sunday's Qualifying Match, with a place in the Swiss Stage on the line.

On paper, Cloud9 were the clear favourites. They had taken Karmine Corp to five games and led 2-1, while FURIA had been swept by MVK without much resistance. We picked C9 to win 3-0 ourselves. They also had a score to settle. FURIA beat them five times on their way to winning the inaugural Americas Cup, the final included, and had won every series between the two teams since 2025. The Brazilians arrived with a weaker record of their own: Americas Cup aside, they had never won a single game on the international stage, and their 3-0 loss to MVK had done nothing to change that.

The series came down to two opposing approaches. Cloud9 stuck to the identity they had shown against KC: control the dragons, build an early lead, then slow the game down and wait for the right fight. FURIA answered with drafts built for the late game. C9's approach paid off in game one, a patient and controlled win. From game two onwards, FURIA's drafts made them pay for it. Every minute C9 spent waiting gave the Brazilian carries more time to scale, and FURIA took their chances whenever C9 forced the issue. A lone dive by Robert "Blaber" Huang in game two handed them Baron and the equaliser. Edward "Tactical" Ra was caught out of position far too often, and his Ziggs, already a losing pick against KC, missed too many ultimates to matter in fights.

C9 kept collecting early dragons, but FURIA's carries reached their power spikes and won the fights that mattered. The series belonged to Pedro "Tatu" Seixas. FURIA's jungler beat Blaber on tempo and on ganks, and his presence in skirmishes and teamfights was on another level, from a monstrous Cho'Gath to a hyper-proactive Vi. He is our MVP of the series. Andrey "Ayu" Saraiva supplied the damage, his Miss Fortune bringing real weight to FURIA's teamfights, and by game four mid laner Arthur "Tutsz" Peixoto Machado was dictating the tempo as FURIA closed out the series in under 30 minutes.

The result turns the Play-Ins upside down. Cloud9, the team that came closest to beating KC, become the first team eliminated from Worlds 2026 and leave Los Angeles in 19th place, last of the 19 teams in the tournament, after a fourth straight series loss to FURIA. The Brazilians, who looked out of their depth two days ago, now have their first international series win outside the Americas Cup and a real shot at the Swiss Stage.

What's next

The rematch of the opening night should be far closer than the first meeting. FURIA looked like a different team against Cloud9, and a first international series win can give a roster new momentum. MVK, for their part, have now shown much of their playbook over two series, from the flex picks to the Kog'Maw mid and the switch in the jungle, and their lack of experience could start to weigh. We expect FURIA to win 3-1.

Tatu, for his part, already had the rematch in mind after beating Cloud9:

MVK had us in the first half not gonna lie, but tomorrow we're gonna get'em.

The winner faces Karmine Corp in Sunday's Qualifying Match for the only Swiss Stage spot on offer in the Play-Ins. The loser goes home.
