Worlds 2026 quarterfinals — Gen.G outclass LYON and advance to the semifinals

Gen.G are into the semifinals without dropping a game. The rematch of their Swiss Stage series against LYON was expected to be one-sided, and it was, more for the manner than the score. LYON had their windows in all three games, but Gen.G were better in every lane, played faster than in their first meeting and punished nearly every mistake their opponents made.

A gap in every lane

After the slow, macro-heavy chess match of their Swiss Stage meeting, Gen.G changed the tempo. They skirmished more, moved faster around the map and jumped on every window LYON gave them.

That intensity was no accident. Speaking to DPM Esports after the series, support Joo "Duro" Min-gyu explained that Gen.G never took LYON lightly:

Quote

Throughout this whole year especially, I felt like the Western teams have improved quite a lot. [...] We definitely stayed wary of them, and that's why we were constantly improving against them as well.

The top lane set the tone for the whole series. Kim "Kiin" Gi-in outclassed Niship "Dhokla" Doshi in all three games, and that lane became Gen.G's permanent entry point: a losing side for LYON, constant pressure, and no way to stabilise vision or resources elsewhere. Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu outplayed Kacper "Inspired" Słoma with the same windows and better timing, Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon held his lane in the first two games before producing a masterclass in the third, and Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk's bot lane, a little shaky early in game one, settled quickly and stayed solid. Each of Gen.G's solo laners and their AD carry had their own carry game at some point.

Dhokla lose

The opener summed up the pattern. LYON's bot lane got ahead early with Ezreal, and Gen.G lost the first dragon fight, as they so often do. It changed nothing. Through Kiin's Olaf and pressure in the side lanes, Gen.G turned a small deficit into a lead of several thousand gold without even needing to win a big teamfight, then closed the game with two Barons.

LYON beaten by their own choices

LYON's real problem seemed to be structural. Their drafts were too risky or poorly optimised, with compositions that only worked if LYON were the best team on the map, and their mid game was far too passive. Between roughly 10 and 22 minutes, they kept giving away leads simply by doing nothing, and against a team of Gen.G's calibre, that is a death sentence.

In Game 2, LYON drafted an all-in bot lane around Pyke, a lane-or-nothing gamble against Ruler's Ashe. The 2v2 collapsed from level two, a forced contest on the first dragon turned into a lost fight, and Canyon camped the bot lane to break it open completely. LYON found a few kills along the way but never any tempo, and the game turned into a stomp.

The third game was the closest, and the most frustrating for LYON. Gen.G punished their Gangplank top from the start, diving him again and again with Pantheon and Chovy's Taliyah. Yet LYON clawed their way back, won a big fight around the third dragon and found themselves in a strong spot, with a composition built to scale and control space. That was the moment to slow the game down. Instead, LYON rushed: unnecessary contests, vision fights before the objective was even up, and finally a charge around Baron and dragon straight into a Taliyah wall. Chovy's walls split LYON's team apart in the fights that followed, Gen.G took Baron, dragon and a huge swing in gold, and the final fight in mid ended 5-0.

What's next

Gen.G leave this quarterfinal looking like the most impressive team of the tournament, with one warning sign: their habit of handing opponents an opening around the first dragons. LYON could not punish it. A better team might.

That team could be Invictus Gaming, who await them in the semifinal. It also brings back the question that has followed this roster for years. Gen.G have the best players in almost every lane, and yet Chovy is still chasing his first Worlds title, while the organisation has stumbled at this exact stage before. Is this finally the year they get past the semifinals?

For LYON, the tournament ends with a performance that was respectable but limited against the top regions. It also ends North America's Worlds. Cloud9 fell to FURIA, Team Liquid went out against LOS, and LYON, after a good qualification series, could not take that level into the quarterfinals. With question marks over the roster's future, even with contracts still running, the LCS leaves Allen with very little to show for its campaign.
