IG Wei on his recent form: “It could be the second spring of my career”

IG are in the semifinals after beating Top Esports 3-1, and Wei was at the centre of it. DPM Esports spoke with the IG jungler for the OTPLoL broadcast about the long pause that interrupted the series, the champion pool he keeps reshaping, the best result of his career, and the Gen.G test that probably comes next.

There was a long pause today, which is unusual. How did you keep your focus to come back with the same intensity in game four?

So we ate some bananas to get more energy, and we discussed the in-game content from game three a little. After that we just had a short break and some rest, to be able to come into game four well prepared.

If the team need me to deal more damage, I’m okay with that. If they want me to go the other way and play some utility champs, I’m also okay with that.

Talking about you individually, you started very strong in the Swiss stage, but you played a lot of bruisers and engage champions. Today you played three carries as well. How comfortable do you feel in the meta right now?

My champion choices really depend on the needs of the team and on what the coach wants me to pick. For example, if they need me to deal more damage, I’m okay with that. If they want me to go the other way and play some utility champs, I’m also okay with that.

I feel like you play all of that so well, that whole variety of champions. Do you feel like you’re playing at the peak level of your career right now?

Based on the results so far, this World Championship is definitely the best result for me. So it could be the second spring of my career.

You came back after a hectic year with BLG in 2024, and then barely missed out on Worlds last year. What makes you so resilient, and what would it mean for you to actually lift that trophy?

As a pro player, my dream is always to be able to lift the final trophy at Worlds. I know the journey can’t be that easy, but I don’t want to give it up that easily. So whenever there’s an opportunity, I’d like to just try my best to handle it. I try my best to perform more. I would like to just try my best to go further.

It’s not settled yet, but you’ll probably face Gen.G next. How confident are you against them, and do you think they’re the strongest team at the tournament?

If we face Gen.G, they’re definitely a super strong team. But we’re going to try our best to showcase the in-game content we prepared, and we’d like to try our best to see whether we can get a chance to beat them. We’ll just try our best.
