Korea answer the call
The LCK arrived as the region to beat and played like it. Gen.Ghad a rough start against Invictus Gaming, losing an early Voidgrub fight, but their mid-jungle duo took control from the mid game and leaned on its mechanical edge to close the game out methodically in 26 minutes.
Hanwha Life Esports went further still and dismantled Top Esports in 23 minutes. Kim "Zeka" Geon-woo's Locke caught 369 so cleanly that TES's top laner may still have had a Valorant match running on his second screen, and that one kill was all Zeka needed to snowball the game. His 17/1/5 line has already wrecked a fair share of Pick'Ems. Choi "Zeus" Woo-je was just as sharp, notably in a dragon fight where he dove the backline, dealt his damage and repositioned perfectly to let HLE take the objective in peace. It was a masterclass from start to finish.

Dplus KIA had a far bigger scare.G2 Esports dominated them for more than 25 minutes, and DK trailed 0-7 on kills, yet they stayed in the game, clawing back resources in the side lanes until a few catches, a Baron and a final dragon fight turned it around, with ShowMaker steady throughout on Syndra (3/1/5). G2 had the game in their hands and let it slip. T1 completed the LCK's 4-0 with a 24-minute win over LOS, Faker untouchable on LeBlanc (6/0/7), while LOS looked, as expected, well below the level of the tournament's top teams.
Europe bring down the LPL
Given who they faced, losses for IG and TES were almost to be expected. The other two LPL defeats were not, and both came from Europe.
Movistar KOI produced the first real upset of these Worlds against Bilibili Gaming, the ideal start for a team whose last two Worlds runs both ended in the Swiss Stage. A double kill in the bot lane at level two set them on their way, and Joseph "Jojopyun" Joon Pyun turned fight after fight on Sylas by stealing the enemy Ashe's ultimate. The snowball was not without trouble, as BLG won a few teamfights and made MKOI doubt. But Supa had built far too big a lead over his opposite number, and MKOI's composition left BLG's immobile champions with no way to make an impact in fights. After the game, Jojopyun saw the win as more than a good result for his team:
I feel like the West is catching up.

Karmine Corp, MKOI's rivals at home, then took on the LPL champions. Anyone's Legend, led by a Tarzan many consider one of the best junglers in the world, started as favourites. Kim "Canna" Chang-dong was put under pressure in lane, but KC refused to be snowballed. They avoided the cheese ganks and won their 3v3s, most notably through a Caliste "Caliste" Henry-Hennebert Flash followed by a perfectly timed Renata ultimate from Alan "Busio" Cwalina. The game was decided in the top-side jungle, where, after a series of misplays on both sides, a Shockwave and a Jarvan IV Cataclysm opened the way for Canna to tear through AL's backline on Jax for a quadra kill. A clean final Baron fight sealed a 12-4 win in 33 minutes, KC's third straight victory over AL after their 2-0 at the Esports World Cup.
