Romain Bigeard on G2's elimination: "We only get what we deserve"

G2’s Worlds is over, beaten by HLE, and Romain Bigeard isn’t looking for a story to explain it. DPM Esports spoke with G2’s general manager for the OTPLoL broadcast about the narratives going round, why he refuses to blame the transfer rumours, what a year with every LEC title is actually worth to him, and what comes next.

A defeat that hurts. How are you feeling? How is the team feeling?

There have been better days. We’re a bit sad, obviously. But we played badly across the whole of Worlds, so in the end we only get what we deserve. It’s a shame, because I thought we had enough to bounce back in these best-of-threes. We got a complicated draw with Korea. Well, that’s how it is.

Everyone’s trying to find the little thing, you know. Us first. Stories about a change of style, stories about lost scrims, honestly, I’d like it to be one of those reasons.

Did you see that something wasn’t right internally? Did you see a difference compared to the rest of the year? You’ve followed them all year — did you see anything different at this Worlds?

No. I’ve seen plenty of narratives going round on social media. Everyone’s trying to find the little thing, you know. Us first. Stories about a change of style, stories about lost scrims, honestly, I’d like it to be one of those reasons. I think they just clicked faster than us on the other side, so there it is. We don’t deserve it, and it’s back home.

You did click faster than them plenty of times this year. And you told me Worlds was the most important thing. What changed, in your view?

I don’t have the answer yet. We’re going to sit down and think about it. We clicked faster than them at First Stand, where I think they were also a bit lost, and it went better at MSI. But in best-of-fives, we weren’t in it, so it’s frustrating.

Just before MSI you told me that everything you were doing this year was huge training for Worlds. Do you consider the year a failure in the end, or can you still take a step back?

It’s a decent year. I don’t think it’s a good year.

You won every LEC split, though.

We’ve got plenty of those at home, it doesn’t change much. What counts is Worlds. It’s not disappointing, because a lot of things happened this year and it wouldn’t be honest to throw it all in the bin. But yeah, not great.

We haven’t played a Worlds in five years without transfer rumours. So no, it doesn’t affect anything. We had very honest conversations with the players. People need to stop treating players like idiots and like children.

You mentioned the narratives going round. The one I’ve heard most is about the transfer rumours that are everywhere. Is that something that could have affected the players?

There are always transfer rumours. We haven’t played a Worlds in five years without transfer rumours. So no, it doesn’t affect anything. We had very honest conversations with the players. People need to stop treating players like idiots and like children. They know perfectly well what’s going on. And on top of that, we were really quite cut off from everything. So no, we can only look at ourselves in the mirror. There are no external reasons — “ah, maybe they’re going to leave, ah, maybe they want…” No. Unfortunately, in a way, because it would be easy to blame that, you know. And in general, most of those rumours are built afterwards, once it’s over — to take the famous Mikyx–Yike example. So there it is. Disappointing.

G2 projects are often two-year ones. Are we reaching the end of a cycle, in your view? Or is that something you need more time to think about?

I’ll pass on the comment for now.

Last question. What’s next for you, for next year?

Right now, we’re going to book tickets, go home and do the mercato.

A closing word on this Worlds?

Sorry. Not great. “Not great” will be the word.
