Gen.G Canyon on his 2021 peak: "I am bound to be better than my old self"

Canyon is back in a Worlds final for the first time since 2021, and he isn’t ready to call this his best. DPM Esports spoke with the Gen.G jungler for the OTPLoL broadcast about the Player of the Series award he plays down, how he rates himself against his 2021 peak, and why he says Gen.G never doubted themselves.

It’s been five years since the last time you made a Worlds final. How much does it mean to be back?

Since 2021, it’s been so long. It’s been such a long time since I’ve been able to step up to the Grand Final. And right now, just being able to make it all the way to the Grand Final is such a meaningful thing, and I’m just feeling so grateful.

I guess I am bound to be better than my old self. I just feel like maybe it’s just that everyone grew around me. All the players have improved, and I think that’s probably why.

You were also named Player of the Series. Do you think you’re in the best form of your career right now?

Well, to say that it was my best performance — I feel like I made a little too many small mistakes here and there. So rather than being able to say that this was my best, I feel like maybe luck was a part of it, maybe some parts of it were my gameplay. I wouldn’t call it my best.

Do you think the Canyon of 2021, at his peak, is hard to beat?

Compared to my 2021 self, I guess I am bound to be better than my old self. I just feel like maybe it’s just that everyone grew around me. All the players have improved, and I think that’s probably why. I’d like to say maybe that’s why it feels like you could have that question. But I have improved since then.

After the past two years at Worlds, a lot of people were starting to doubt that Gen.G could beat their demons. Have you ever doubted yourself during your time with Gen.G, and what has made the difference this year?

Even in the past two years, it was us making it to Worlds after a really good performance throughout the year. So I don’t think we’ve ever really doubted ourselves. And this year in particular, we’ve just been working so hard, and it’s all the effort we put in that actually made it happen. So I’m just really happy that I was able to make it all the way here.

Who do you want to face in the Grand Final?

It’s really hard to predict. [laughs] I don’t know who’s going to make it out to the Grand Final, but regardless of who our opponent is, we’re just going to do our best to win it.
