One mistake was all Gen.G needed
IG came in as the most aggressive early-game team left in the bracket, and that aggression ended up being their undoing. In the first two games, a single failed dive was enough for Gen.G to take control and never let go.
The opener was settled within minutes. Gen.G simply took the strongest picks of the patch, with Olaf for Kim "Kiin" Gi-in, Qiyana for Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu and Cassiopeia for Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon, while IG leaned on comfort picks and theoretical counters. Kang "TheShy" Seung-lok then went in far too early on Kled in the top lane, with Yan "Wei" Yang-Wei's Vi not ready to follow up. IG gave up first blood, then a double kill to Canyon's Qiyana, and against a Qiyana that far ahead, the game was already out of reach.
The second game followed the same pattern. IG got much of what they wanted in the draft, and their Lucian and Milio bot lane started well against Ashe and Seraphine, but Kiin's last-pick Gwen proved a clever answer to their whole composition. IG kept forcing dives, first in the bot lane, then on Gwen in the top lane, and kept getting them wrong. Each failed attempt handed Gen.G more gold, and while IG found a couple of good fights along the way, Gen.G answered every opening with better macro and closed the game around the decisive dragons. For the first time, this Gen.G core led a Worlds semifinal 2-0.
