Can you introduce yourself and explain what you do at Riot?
My name is Chris Greeley. I’m the global product lead for League of Legends Esports. So I work on all of our international events, all of the global strategy for all the things that we’re doing, and then I work with all of our regional teams as they put together their strategies, so that it all feels cohesive.
The last time we talked, you teased me that the WSCI and the Demacia Cup could be coming. Now that both are done, what’s your assessment? Are you happy with how they turned out?
Yeah, I’m really happy with both of them, honestly. WSCI, or what people are calling Tier 2 Worlds or baby Worlds — we thought that competition was great. I think it creates a better aspirational path for Tier 2 players. In the early days it was, “hey, is Tier 2 here to develop players, or is it here so that Tier 1 teams can farm slots?” This is long ago, like 2016. I think we doubled down on development, but maybe didn’t have the resources there for a lot of teams to develop. We still saw great development. ERLs are great. I think the NA college programme has been great. I think we’ve seen really great development out of the LCK Challengers. And the LDL, for quite a while, was pumping out talent.
